Photo Frame Sizes in India: Full Size Chart and Which Size to Use Where

EDP Frames, Indira Nagar, Lucknow · Updated 17 September 2026

Most framing mistakes are size mistakes. People pick a frame they like, bring the photo, and then find the picture has to be cropped, or the frame looks lost on a large wall. Getting the size right first makes everything else easy.

This is the full chart of photo frame sizes we work with in our Indira Nagar workshop, in both inches and centimetres, with a plain answer to where each one actually belongs.

Standard photo frame size chart (India)

These are the sizes that studios, labs and frame shops in India stock as standard. A standard size is cheaper and faster than a custom size, so if your photo can fit one of these, use it.

Size (inches)Size (cm)Best used for
4 x 610 x 15Table top, small desk photo, gift frames
5 x 713 x 18Bedside table, small shelf, baby photos

12 x 1530 x 38Wedding portraits, medium wall pieces

A4 and certificate sizes

Certificate and document framing has its own set, and people mix these up with photo sizes constantly.

DocumentSize (inches)Size (cm)
A55.8 x 8.314.8 x 21
A4 (most certificates, degrees)8.3 x 11.721 x 29.7
A3 (large citations, posters)11.7 x 16.529.7 x 42
Legal / foolscap8.5 x 1321.6 x 33

An A4 certificate does not fit an 8 x 10 frame. It is taller and narrower. If someone sells you an 8 x 10 for a degree certificate, the corners will be cut or the paper will buckle. Ask for an A4 frame by name.

Match the size to your photo's shape, not your wall

Every photo has a ratio, and the ratio decides which sizes will fit without cropping.

If your photo does not fit any standard size, you have two choices: crop it slightly, or add a mount (mat board) so a smaller photo sits inside a bigger frame. The mount is usually the better answer, because it adds breathing space and makes a modest photo look considered.

How big should the frame be for the wall?

A simple rule we use: the framed piece should cover roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. Over a three-seater sofa, that means a 24 x 36 single piece or a set of three 12 x 18s. Over a bedside table, an 8 x 12. Anything much smaller and the wall swallows it.

Wall or furnitureSuggested frame
Above a 3-seater sofa24 x 36, or three 12 x 18 in a row
Above a bed (queen)20 x 30, or a 5-frame collage set
Narrow passage or staircase8 x 10 or 10 x 12 in a vertical run
Office cabin wallA4 certificates, 11 x 14 portraits
Entrance or foyer16 x 20 single, eye level

Hang the centre of the frame at about 57 to 60 inches from the floor — that is normal eye level for most people. Keep 2 to 3 inches of gap between frames in a grouping, and keep that gap the same everywhere. Uneven gaps are what make a collage wall look untidy, not the frames themselves.

Standard size or custom size?

Standard sizes are stocked, so they cost less and are ready faster. A custom size is cut to your exact measurement, which you need when the photo is an odd shape, when you are framing something that is not a photo (a saree, a jersey, a painting), or when the piece has to fit a specific gap on the wall.

At our workshop a standard-size frame is usually ready the same day or the next day. A custom size takes two to four working days depending on the moulding and the glass. If you are framing a set for a wall, order all of them together — the mouldings will match exactly, which is hard to guarantee if you come back months later.

How to measure correctly

Frame sizes in India refer to the photo size, not the outer size of the frame. A 12 x 18 frame holds a 12 x 18 photo; the outside will be bigger by the width of the moulding, usually one to two inches on each side. If you are fitting a frame into a tight space, measure the space and tell us the outer size you need — we will work backwards to the photo size.

If you have the physical print, measure it with a tape in inches before you call. If you only have a digital file, send it on WhatsApp and we will tell you the largest size it can print at without going soft.

Not sure which size your photo needs?

Send us the picture on WhatsApp. We will tell you the right size, the right moulding and the exact price the same day. Pickup from Indira Nagar or delivery across Lucknow, and pan-India shipping for bulk orders.
